LAQUASIG - Laboratório de Sistemas de Informação Geográfica is located at Rua Jornalista Orlando Dantas, 59, Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro.

LAQUASIG uses basically IDRISI GIS software - the Kilimanjaro version developed by Clark University, USA. It is affordable and functional with over 100 statistical modules, and most importantly, relatively easy to learn. It has been our pleasure to interact with university undergraduates, high school students as well as government fisheries extension personnel and find that within one week they could get a grasp of basic manipulations charactersitci of geoprocessing. We also use a series of other software which facilitate image manipulation and processing.

 

The lab has thus been a convergence point for researchers, MSc students from Brazil and occasionally foreign students interested in using geoprocessing and GIS in their theses, research and investigations. Occasionally some work is done for the private sector.

Currently the lab offers 'Introduction to GIS and Remote Sensing' to our Master in Marine Sciences MSc. students.
