Finding suitable sites for marine turtle nesting habitat
along Rio de Janeiro
Five of the 7 species of marine turtles live and nest along the brazilian coastline. Despite the many efforts of conservationists led by Project Tamar - funded by Petrobras, there is still a lot to learn. Along the Rio de Janeiro coast, 3 species of marine turtles are well known, in some cases migrating to nest.
What are the turtles preferences and necessary conditions for establishing nesting habitat?
That is what Danielle Moraes undertakes in a GIS-based study developing relevant information layers including environmental factors such as sea surface temperature, beach sand and profile and environmental conditions necessary to integrate in a multi-criterial model in order to predict best turtle nesting habitat sites. It is hoped this study can contribute to knowledge necessary for marine turtle conservation.
